The Book Elves love old-time Christmas tv specials, and their favorite
is the 1964 Rankin-Bass classic, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Being
the Book Elves, they have their own, um, “unique” spin on this
seemingly-innocent children’s tale, which they have discovered is
actually a clever commentary on the struggle between Capitalism and
Communism. Rudolph is the proletariat, the abused working class hero
(complete with a “red” nose, get it?) who is tormented by Joseph
McCarthy (Coach Comet) and abandoned by Capitalism (Santa). He is
rescued by Lenin (Herbie the Elf) and eventually winds up on the
Hollywood Blacklist (the Island of Misfit Toys), from which he is only
redeemed when the Capitalists (Santa & Co., Inc.) suddenly discovers
that he’s commercially useful. Yes indeed, watching Christmas specials
with the Book Elves is a barrel of fun.
But before they started to unpack the message of Class Intersectionality
in Frosty the Snowman, the Book Elves finished our latest catalog-
