was created by Jean de Brunhoff who produced the first seven books of
the series until his death of tuberculosis at the age of 37. His son,
Laurent, took over in 1946 when he wrote and illustrated the first of
his thirty Babar books at the age of 21. On the page of this book with a
printed drawing of a young Babar climbing a rope is a SIGNED ORIGINAL
SKETCH by Laurent de Brunhoff of an older Babar dangling at the bottom.
