[Richard Graves:] The Spiritual Quixote: or, The Summer’s Ramble of Mr. Geoffry Wildgoose. A Comic Romance. London: Printed for J. Dodsley, Pall-Mall, MDCCLXXIV [1774]. The second edition. Three volumes, 12mo (17.5 cm), in early/period full calf, gilt-lettered contrasting spine labels; xxiv, 352 pp,; viii, 287 pp.; xii, 323 pp.; with the half-title pages, three engraved frontispieces and an engraved vignette to the title of vol. I. ESTC T57374.

Bindings with scattered rubbing, wear and bumping to the extremities, joints professionally repaired, volume number spine labels renewed; light toning and occasional stains and small spots to the leaves, one leaf with loss to the margin not affecting any text, four leaves bound out of order in vol. III; else generally very good: clean and sound, firmly bound. Paste-downs with the elaborate engraved armorial bookplates of Dobyns Yate, Esq. of Bromesberrow Place [Gloucestershire].

A satire by Richard Graves (1715-1804), poet, novelist, curate, and tutor of Malthus. "Marked by a lively, unaffected style, [Graves's] prose works were very popular in their day, but they have been almost entirely forgotten except for one novel, The Spiritual Quixote. This tale of a young country squire and his mild adventures on a tour of the midlands is of considerable interest for its gentle satire on Methodism as well as for its clear account of rural life and manners" (Kunitz & Haycraft).
