Parkman, Francis, Jr. THE CALIFORNIA AND OREGON TRAIL: Being Sketches of Prairie and Rocky Mountain Life. New York: George P. Putnam. 1849. First edition, first printing. 8vo. 448pp. With the tinted frontispiece and added engraved title. Leaf of ads before title, numbered "1" & "2", and 4 leaves of ads at back numbered "3"-"10": this is B.A.L.'s Terminal Catalog B. There are 2 forms of the final ads, but B.A.L. states, "sequence if any, not known." The other first printing points are: no page reference on the frontispiece, and author's name on spine stamped from a sans-serif face. Orig. dark green cloth, blind and gilt stamped, bottom of spine very lightly rubbed. Inner paper hinges starting. With the autograph on the front free endpaper, "Rich' Cowan, April 10, 1849." Some foxing to preliminary leaves, but a solid, very good copy, the cloth unusually nice.   $3,500.00 (trade discount allowed)
