"By "the English Malady" Cheyne meant hypochondria or what was later
known as "neurrasthenia". In this quite fascinating book, Cheyne
describes his own case supposed to be due to the vagaries of English
weather. He estimated that a third of all his patients were neurotic."
Heirs of Hippocrates #482 Cushing C210, Garrison Morton 4840, Osler
2304, Waller 1950, Wellcome II; p339.
This copy belonged to Gamaliel Bradford in 1819 and is signed and dated
by him; this is the Revolutionary War veteran of Saratoga & Monmouth who
gained fame as a Privateer in the Quasi-War With France.
