MAXWELL, Joseph Renner. THE NEGRO QUESTION OR HINTS FOR THE PHYSICAL
IMPROVEMENT OF THE NEGRO RACE, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO WEST AFRICA.
London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1892. First Edition. Decorated green cloth;
[8], 188, [12] pages. Consists of five chapters: "Negro Hideousness the
Principle Curse of the Race," "Divine Discontent;" "Miscegenation;"
"West African Half-Castes," and "Relation of Races." What is most
surprising about this title is the discovery one makes when one comes to
page 41: "I am a Negro of pure descent, I have travelled a little, I
have been educated at Oxford ... but I must confess with regret that,
except the Chinese, I have never seen another race approaching, even
within a measurable distance, the Negro in ugliness." Maxwell's belief
is that blacks and whites are equal in all respects except for physical
appearance, and that that can be improved in his race by breeding with
whites. This title and an 1881 pamphlet of 23 pages on relations between
Europe and West Africa by Maxwell appear in Work, page 172. Text block
cracked in two places but still tight, some pages roughly opened; spine
rubbed so that lettering is hard to read. Very Good. (#018468)
