James, William. A Pluralistic Universe. Hibbert Lectures at Manchester College on the Present Situation in Philosophy. New York: Longmans Green and Co., printed by the Riverside Press, Cambridge, 1909.
First edition; Octavo; pp; v, (vi), (2), 3-404, (ii), index, printer’s slug; green cloth and gray paper covered boards with a paper spine label lettered in black, top edge gilt; edge wear, label rubbed, else a clean tight copy; “James' great defense of pluralism which was originally delivered as the Hibbert Lectures given at Manchester College Oxford in 1908-1909. “

An interesting copy, first there is a bookseller’s tag from “Joseph M. McDonough, Scarce & Fine Books, Albany New York” next is a bookplate on the free fly from the “Private Library of W. H. Stout”. On the paste-down is the tasteful bookplate of Frederic Rowland Marvin, the author of such works as “The Literature of the Insane”; “Philosophy of Spiritualism”; “Epidemic Delusions” and other works; Tipped on to the rear paste-down is a postcard addressed to Marvin with a manuscript note from William James mailed from Chocurua N.H. September 14, 1902, “I thank you heartily for your kind letter. The book which you say you are sending has doubtless gone to my home in Cambridge where I shall find it on my return at the end of the month. It will doubtless afford me interest & instruction and I thank you for it. Wm. James” , mailed to the Western Avenue address in Albany of Marvin. The letter predates the book and was added later no doubt by Marvin.
