Davis, John Francis.  THE CHINESE: A GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE EMPIRE OF
CHINA AND ITS INHABITANTS.  In Two Volumes.  Illustrated with Wood-cuts.
London: Nattali and Bond, circa 1850.  Early edition.  Two volumes. pp: iv,
395; (vi), 459 with index; 54 full-page woodcut illustrations. Bound in tan
calf, gilt-decorated spines with red and brown labels, double rules on all
boards, dentelles, marbled endpapers and edges; armorial bookplate on free
endpaper of Volume I. 6.5" x 4".  Very Good condition.

School prize bindings with Wellington College, coats of arms, mottoes, and
dates (mdccclxi) on covers of both volumes. Presentation inscriptions in
both volumes on verso endpapers:  "Henry C. Monck Ridley / The Prince
Consorts Prize / for German, 1861."  [The author was Governor of Hong Kong
at the time.]   $200.00
