*Longworth, T. Clifton; [Seferis, George; Warner, Rex] . The Worship of
Love: A Study of Nature Worship Throughout the World [Signed by Longworth;
Signed by George Seferis]. London: Torchstream Books, 1954. First edition.
An about Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's
original dark brown cloth (mildly canted, some pushing at the spine ends
and board corners, bare traces of wear, a bit of wrinkling to the first
plate, spine label sharp and crisp), in a Very Good + example of the scarce
dust jacket which matches the free endpapers and pastedowns (small chips
with tears at the spine panel's upper corners, tape repairs to the inside
of the jacket, tiny wear at upper panel corner turns to the spine flaps,
mild wear and tiny chip to the spine label that does not affect the
lettering, portions of some signatures are unopened); copy 298 from a
Limited Edition of 975 copies, SIGNED BY T. CLIFTON LONGWORTH on the title
page and FURTHER SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS on the front free endpaper to
British author Rex Warner, his friend and the translator of some of
Seferis' works. The front free endpaper also shows a single line in Greek
which is underscored and under which has been drawn a series of arrows.
Translated to English, the line, presumably written by Seferis or
Longworth, appears to read "worship of sensual love on island of Cyprus" or
"praise to worship of love on Cyprus". T. Clifton Longworth was deeply
interested in the origins of religious belief and wrote extensively on the
topic. In his studies of both ancient religions and present day tribal
religions, Longworth determined the worship of love, that is, the adoration
of reproductive organs as the symbol of the creative power, to be a common
theme, running through the very first religions and constituting the first
and most universal form of religious expression. This book presents an
extensive study of the topic and, notably, the half-title carries the
following printed statement: "The sale of this book is restricted to
members of the Medical and Legal Professions, Anthropologists,
Psychologists, Sociologists, Ethnologists and Students of Comparative
Religion". In his research, Longworth visited Cyprus where he viewed the
the sacred Cone of Aphrodite. He discusses it and the marvelous Greek
statuary that evolved from it in his Introduction and in the book's first
Chapter. George Seferis, a Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, and one
of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, was the first Greek
ever to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Both he and British author
Rex Warner - to whom Seferis presumably presented the book - were deeply
interested in all things related to Cyprus, thus explaining both the giving
of the book by Seferis to Warner and the single line written by under
Seferis's signature. Copies of Longworth's books signed by him are quite
scarce (this Limited Edition was not called to be signed), as are books
signed by George Seferis. This copy, of course, carries both signatures and
also constitutes a nice association between two noted authors, the Nobel
Laureate George Seferis and the noted author and translator Rex Warner.
RARE. Fine in very good + dust-jacket. Hardcover. (#6024)*

*[Clemens, Samuel] [Paine, Albert Bigelow -- Arrangement and
Commentary]. Mark Twain's Letters. New York: Harper and Brothers, 1917.
First edition. A Fine copy of this two-volume set of Mark Twain's Letters,
the same being arranged and commented upon by Albert Bigelow Paine,
and being one of 350 sets of this Large Paper Edition, illustrated.
Chemised and slipcased, the Volumes are in Fine condition with each volume
showing a mild bump / binding defect to its front board's upper right
corner. Volume II lacks the tissue guard to its frontispiece. The set wears
a Very Good or better example of the rare dust jackets which, being
oversized (as issued), in addition to water spotting to the spine panels,
show some wear and tear to the portions which overlap the board edges and
spine ends. Each dust jacket also shows some additional edge tearing with
some of the tears stabilized by archival tape applied to the verso. The
two-volume trade edition was bound in red cloth and copies of it are, in
our experience, far from common. Copies of this Limited edition -- bound
with a cloth spine and paper-covered boards -- of which only 350 were
issued, are quite scarce indeed and copies in their original dust jackets
(in any condition) are somewhere between being as scarce as hen's teeth and
RARE. An EXCELLENT SET OF THE 350-COPY LIMITED EDITION IN THEIR ORIGINAL
DUST JACKETS w**hich are, in our experience, RARE INDEED. Fine in very good
+ dust-jacket. Hardcover. (#6303) *

Larkin (author of "Art and Life in America"), Original Correspondence to
Oliver Waterman Larkin; Original Telegram conveying notice to Larkin that
his great work has won the Prize, Original sketchbook with Illustrations by

America": Including the Telegram awarding the Pulitzer, 2 Manuscript
Stories with original illustrations by Larkin (many of which are signed by
him, Larkin's original 1922 Italy sketch book, original letters to Larkin
by notable persons, and more. The Archive e includes: (i) A handwritten
copy of "The Adventures of Columbine" inscribed "To Columbine Herself

sketchbook, about 2/3 filled with pencil sketches and dra**ings by Oliver
Larkin (presumably while in Italy) with the notation at front that it was

American Express in Firenze), the sketches being mostly of an architectural
and landscape nature, as well of presumably local individuals who caught
Larkin's eye as interesting or noteworthy and occasionally humorous - most
of the drawings are identified. Two of the rear pages contain some
notations on Larkin's travel itinerary and expenses. Larkin's talent as an
artist is here very evident as he captures the essence of the Italian
country and cityscapes succinctly and accurately; (v) the Original Telegram
addressed to Prof. Oliver W. Larkin at Northampton Massachusetts dated May
1, 1950 from Grayson L. Kirk Provost of Columbia University stating "On

giving the details of the same, and with the inscription of performers
"From the Admirateurs of "Lark" and Georgie Shaw" signed by performers on
the front free endpaper and dated April 1970**, just months before Larkin's
death. The condition of most items in the Archive is about Very Good
overall, with some edge wear and soiling to the older materials. The
contents of the original works and letters are very good. An Excellent
Archive of interesting material relating to the life and creative
activities of one of America's most important educators and proponents of
art, including a goodly number of original sketches and drawings by Oliver
Waterman Larkin (1896-1970), the notable American art historian and
