[John Roby:] Jokeby, a Burlesque on Rokeby, a Poem, in Six Cantos, by an Amateur of Fashion; To which is added, Occasional Notes, by our most Popular Characters. London: Printed for Thomas Tegg [et al], 1813. FIRST EDITION; 12mo (16 cm) in early/period polished calf and plain boards, rebacked in modern calf with gilt spine decorations, marbled page edges; [4], 224 pp.

"When one man writes nonsense why may not another?" So begins the preface of this lively parody of Walter Scott, published anonymously by the twenty year-old John Roby (1793-1850) who would later mature into a successful banker and respected folklorist (i.e. The Traditions of Lancashire). The work went through at least six subsequent editions in the year of publication (some with frontispieces), but this first edition is rather uncommon. Small stains and light soling to the boards, sunning to the spine; some spotting to the endpapers and title-page, else quite clean and fresh, firmly bound.
