Jamaica. ALBUM OF 11 SILVER-GELATIN PHOTOGRAPHS BY A PROFESSIONAL, TAKEN
IN KINGSTON IN 1910, THREE YEARS AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE. This album contains
11 silver-gelatin prints, taken and numbered by a professional, and
featuring a panoramic view of Kingston, three years after the city was
devastated by the 1907 earthquake. The images are mounted onto black
cardstock leaves, with typewritten captions. Bound in black boards,
printed cover label, 10" x 13.5". The photographs vary in size from 9.5" x
7.75" to 4.75" x 3.75". Very Good condition.

Highlighting customary activities such as tobacco, trading at the Jubilee
Market, and traditional costume and dwellings, these photographs illustrate
the reconstruction and preservation of an important Caribbean community
after it was razed by a natural disaster. In these views of Kingston as
well as surrounding villages and a banana plantation, the photographer
captures the essence of indigenous life more than a century ago. The
island's natural features, recorded on a motorcar sojourn, include the
exquisite Castleton Garden, a panoramic birdseye view of Kingston, local
men and women at work, &c. $800.00

Postpaid in US. Usual trade terms.
