[Rarebooks] FS: Scarborough, Maine--Blacksmith buys land in 1788

Maine, Scarborough / Milliken, Jonathan and brothers. HANDWRITTEN LAND DEED
FROM JONATHAN, BENJAMIN AND JOSHUA MILLIKEN (and their wives Esther, Lydia
and Peggey) TO GEORGE HOILE, SCARBOROUGH, CUMBERLAND COUNTY, MASSACHUSETTS
[later Maine]:  21 January 1788--"In the twelfth year of the Independence
of the Confederated States of America."  Original manuscript.  Two pages in
a readable hand; usual tanning from sepia ink.

The Millikens sold blacksmith George Hoile of Scarborough "a Platt of Land
for Eight Pound two shillings Lawfull money." The land is described as
bounding on the lots of Morris O'Brian and the Palmer Lott (so called),
"Lying in a triangular figure and the Same being Sett off to our honoured
Father Nathaniel Milliken in the division of the Millikens Claim by the
Supreme Courts Committee Anno Domini 1784...," &c., &c. Signed by the
Millikens with six paper seals, witnessed by William Sargent and Elisha
Hight, and sworn by Joshua Fabyan, Justice of the Peace. Docketed and
registered in 1801.  10.5" x 7.25".  Very Good condition.

Joshua Milliken (1756-1832) was born in Scarborough and married his wife,
Peggy (nee Margaret Lord), in 1776. He had eight brothers and sisters, some
of whom appear as signers on this document. ~~ Joshua Fabyan (1742-1799)
married Sarah Brackett Fabyan (1740-1820) on 9 January 1766 in Scarborough
where they were born. Joshua Fabyan, who signed this document as Jus.
Peace, served as a Judge in the Cumberland County Court of Common Pleas. He
was descended on his mother's side from George Cleeve, the first settler in
Portland, Maine. ~~ Situate on the southern coast of Maine, Scarborough was
incorporated by the Massachusetts General Court in 1658, and remained
within the boundaries of the Commonwealth until March 15, 1820 when Maine
was granted statehood.  $125.00
