For your consideration we offer the following net to all and postpaid at
$350

India Temperance Almanac And Annual For 1848 Calculated For the Meridian
Of Madras. Madras: South India Temperance Union, printed by P. R. Hunt,
American Mission Press, 1848. Stated Second Edition. 16mo; pp; 48; two
small woodcut engravings; original blue printed paper wrappers; One
closed tear on the front wrapper, a marginal note within and an
ownership name on the front wrapper, else very good or better.

An unusual almanac, rear wrapper has a chart of the "Table Of Daily And
Yearly Pay For All Classes Of Drinkers". This will allow the person to
calculate just how much they are spending on alcohol by week or decade
and the cumulative effects of this spending. Besides the standard
almanac fare regarding dates, and moon phases are pages of Temperance
themed articles and some medical information. OCLC locates a single
example of this title, but it is the 1856 Almanac, it resides in the
State Library of New South Wales. A very scarce piece and an interesting
imprint by a very good printer.
The printer "Phineas Rice Hunt (1816-1878) was an American missionary
printer to India and China, under the auspices of the American Board of
Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM). He saw numerous works
through his press in Tamil and Mandarin, including New and Old
Testaments, a Dictionary of Tamil compiled by Miron Winslow, another
dictionary of Tamil by G.U. Pope, Illustrations of Indian Ornithology by
Thomas C. Jerdon (1847), and Illustrations of Indian Botany by Robert
Wight (1850)."
