Quarto. Handwritten index at front and 233 hand-numbered pages of which 25
or so contain holograph entries. Topics include: Bezoar, 3pp, from
Goldsmith's Animated Nature; Roman Emperors, 1p, chart; Talassio, 2/3p,
from Plutarch's Life of Pompey; Generation, 4pp, from Goldsmith; A
Burlesque on the 1769 Shakespeare Jubilee at Stratford upon Avon, 5-1/2pp,
unattributed [from C. Churchill in The New Foundling Hospital for Wit,
1786; On the Pope's Inscription, 1p, Town & Country Magazine, 1769; On
Seeing Shakespeare's Monument, 1/3p, Town & Country; The Country in
Imitation of Cowley, 1-1/2pp, from a London newspaper, 1778; Expressive
Verses on the Kings of England, 5-1/2pp, unattributed; On Sentimentalists,
3pp, from Monthly Review, 1780; Plutarch's Lives, 1p. The text block is of
heavy rag stock. Entries are penned in sepia ink by a legible hand. Bound
in calf hide, tooled border decorations, spine title PLACEBOOK. Edges of
boards rubbed, spine chipped and intact. Laid in are several handwritten
passages on random slips of paper. Good condition.  $85.00
