Bates, Edward. EDWARD BATES AGAINST THOMAS H. BENTON. St. Louis: Charless & Paschall, Printers. 1828. 12mo. 12pp. Later plain wrappers. Some old soiling.    $750.00 (trade discount allowed)
An early Missouri imprint (Imprint Inventory #93) by its first printer, Joseph Charless, whose earliest imprint is 1808. In 1828 he founded a partnership with Paschall and a few years later left the printing trade.
This pamphlet is Bates's defense against Benton's charge that he had been remiss in protecting his constituents against Spanish land claims in Missouri. Bates later became Lincoln's Attorney General.
