Thomas Hosmer Shepherd and James Elmes: Metropolitan Improvements; or London in the Nineteenth Century: Displayed in a Series of Engravings of the New Buildings, Improvements, &c… London: Published by Jones & Co. Temple of the Muses. 1828-29. Royal 8vo (28 cm), in early half sheep and marbled boards, marbled page edges; vi, 172, ii, 40 pp.; two extra engraved title-pages and 198 steel-engraved plates on 99 leaves bound in at the rear, including the plan of Regent's Park.

More than volume one but less than the complete series, this is nonetheless a very nice collection of detailed and accurate views covering Regent Street, Regents Park, and the squares and crescents improved by John Nash and his contemporaries, together with the smaller villas of Park Village and the Canal, and views of the Bank, Covent Garden Market, the Guildhall, the Royal Exchange, etc., and a number of newly-erected bridges and tunnels. The text of the second part, London in the Nineteenth Century, is incomplete, stopping at p. 40, and bound in that way. Modest wear and rubbing to the binding; plates with intermittent foxing, mostly light, heaviest on the first engraved title-page, else generally clean and sound, firmly bound.
