Mrs. [Lucia Elizabeth Balcombe] Abell: Recollections of the Emperor Napoleon, during the First three Years of His Captivity on the Island of St. Helena: including the Time of His Residence at Her Father's House, "The Briars." London: John Murray, 1845. Second edition; 8vo (21 cm) in original green ribbed cloth decorated in blind and gilt, rebacked with the original spine laid down; xii, 284, [4] pp.; frontispiece and six plates.

INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper: "From the Authoress with her best compliments." The memories, recorded in maturity, of "Betsy" Balcombe, the thirteen-year-old girl who famously befriended Napoleon Bonaparte during the early days of his exile on St. Helena. Binding with some light rubbing, bumping to the corners, sunning to the spine; later penciled inscription on the front endpaper below the author's inscription; contents with a few scattered small spots, else clean and sound, firmly bound. An uncommon book in the original binding, especially so inscribed.
