Mr. Christopher Pitt, the Eclogues and Georgics, with Notes on the Whole, by the Rev. Mr. Joseph Warton. With several new Observations by Mr. Holdsworth, Mr. Spence, and Others. Also, a Dissertation on the Sixth Book of the Æneid, by Mr. Warburton. On the Shield of Æneas, by Mr. W. Whitehead. On the Character of Japis, by the late Dr. Atterbury, Bishop of Rochester. And, Three Essays on Pastoral, Didactic, and Epic Poetry, by the Editor. In four volumes. London: Printed for R. Dodsley in Pall-Mall, 1753. FIRST EDITION. Four volumes, 8vo (20.5 cm), in full period mottled calf with gilt borders on the covers, spines richly gilt in compartments, gilt-lettered contrasting morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers; [2], xxx, 440 pp.; [2], xxiii, [1], 350 pp.; [2], 492, [4] pp.; [2], 448, [46] pp.; with the publisher’s adverts in vols. III and IV, errata and index in vol. IV, and eight engraved plates and maps, two of which are folding. ESTC T139776.

A very nice example of the first collected edition of Warton’s Virgil. Bindings with bumping to the corners, generally modest wear to the extremities, short chip to the top of the spine of vol. I; contents with a few occasional very light spots, small ink stain to the edges of several leaves in vols. II and III, small wormhole to the top corner of three leaves in vol. II; else exceedingly clean and fresh. With the 18th-century engraved armorial bookplates of W. E. Powell, Nanteos [Llanbadarn-y-Creuddyn, Wales], and his signature on the title-pages. Small booklabel of noted book collector J.O. Edwards on the verso of the front endpaper in vol. III. A superb set, handsomely bound and internally fresh.
