*The Items are:*

*Pablo Neruda*. *Late and Posthumous Poems*. A Fine, Superior, copy of
the first edition, first printing, in a Fine dust jacket; a bilingual
Anthology of one hundred of the finest Poems of Pablo Neruda's last years,
years during which he ran for Chile's Presidency, threw his support to
Salvador Allende (who committed suicide during a Chilean military coup
d'état supported by the United States Central Intelligence Agency), served
as Chile's Ambassador to France, and battled the cancer that eventually
killed him. As stated by Robert Creeley: "Poems written in age have a
crucial information, and those of this great poet are singularly valuable
in their intimate yet vast range, their rootedness in the literal human
body, and their unique commitment to a common world. As ever, Neruda is
well served by his most enduring translator, Ben Belitt." Pablo Neruda won
the 1971 Nobel Prize in Literature for The book was issued simultaneously
in hardcover and paperback, with the hardcover copies being vastly scarcer
than are those in paperback. Collectable hardcover copies of this
important Anthology are not terribly common, and copies in a condition as
nice as this one are, in our experience, EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE INDEED. Was
$450. *Discounted Price: $110*

*Pearlman, Mickey [Editor]; Livesey, Margot; McFarland, Dennis;
Davis-Gardner, Angela; Hall, Brian; Weaver, Katharine; Oates, Joyce Carol,
O'Connor; and others*
*A Few Thousand Words About Love [Signed 8X]*
A Very Good or better copy of the first edition, first printing (some
pushing to the spine ends, two small imperfections to the cloth which
appear to be production matters ---- apparently unread), in a Fine dust
jacket with a bar code sticker to the rear panel verso (inside), SIGNED BY
MARGOT LIVESEY, DENNIS MCFARLAND, ANGELA DAVIS-GARDNER, BRIAN HALL,
KATHARINE WEBER, JOYCE CAROL OATES, MICKEY PEARLMAN, and LARRY O'CONNOR; a
group of original memoirs by noted authors on the subject of Love. We
seldom see copies of this book signed by any of the contributors, and
copies signed by as many of them as have signed this copy are, in our
experience, QUITE SCARCE INDEED. Was $135. *Discounted Price: $45*

*Raymond Carver. In a Marine Light. *A Fine, Superior, copy of the first
edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original blue cloth (tiny push
to the spine panel's upper left corner) in a Fine dust jacket (minor
soiling); a selection of Raymond Carver's Poems (selected by Carver
himself) of which no equivalent single edition was published in America.
The Poems were gathered from two of Carver's first two collections of Poems
published in America: "Where Water Comes Together With Other Water"
(Random House, 1985) and "Ultramarine" (Random House, 1986). "In a Marine
Light" is the Debut collection of Carver's Poems to appear outside of
America and contains an epigraph taken from Pablo Neruda's "Isla Negra"
that does not appear in either of the above-mentioned American
collections. A Fine, Superior, copy of the FIRST COLLECTION OF RAYMOND
CARVER'S POEMS TO BE PUBLISHED OUTSIDE OF HIS NATIVE AMERICA. Was $175.*
Discounted Price: $75*

* Sanford Fillmore Bennett. In the Sweet By and By. [Signed 2X] A Very
Good or better MANUSCRIPT COPY of THE SWEET BY AND BY LYRICS by their
author SANFORD FILLMORE BENNETT written entirely in Bennett's hand, with a
presentation by him to Miss Mary C. Day, PLACED AND TWICE DATED ON FEBRUARY
8, 1886 by SANFORD FILLMORE BENNETT. QUITE SCARCE.[The song was first
published in 1868.]The Manuscript Copy is written on a sheet of paper
measuring approximately 7 7/8 inches X 5 1/8 inches. The paper shows a
number of bend and crease lines as well two horizontal folds, with each
fold showing a short tear beginning on the sheet's right side. There is a
small tape repair to the sheet's lower left corner. In his Autobiography,
Bennett described the composing of the song, the music to which was written
by his good friend Joseph Philbrick Webster as follows:Mr. Webster, like
many musicians, was of an exceedingly nervous and sensitive nature, and
subject to periods of depression, in which he looked upon the dark side of
all things in life. I had learned his peculiarities so well that on meeting
him I could tell at a glance if he was melancholy, and had found that I
could rouse him up by giving him a new song to work on.He came into my
place of business [in Elkhorn, Wisconsin], walked down to the stove, and
turned his back on me without speaking. I was at my desk. Turning to him, I
said, "Webster, what is the matter now?" "It's no matter," he replied, "it
will be all right by and by." The idea of the hymn came me like a flash of
sunlight, and I replied, "The Sweet By and By! Why would not that make a
good hymn?" "Maybe it would," he said indifferently. Turning to my desk I
penned the words of the hymn as fast as I could write. I handed the words
to Webster. As he read his eyes kindled, and stepping to the desk he began
writing the notes. Taking his violin, he played the melody and then jotted
down the notes of the chorus. It was not over thirty minutes from the time
I took my pen to write the words before two friends with Webster and myself
were singing the hymn."The song has been covered by a Who's Who of Music
including Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, The Statler Brothera, Willie Nelson,
Johnny Cash, Acapella, Randy Travis, Loretta Lynn, Maranda Lambert, Jim
Neighbors, Nat King Cole, and by many others. IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON
REQUEST. Was $1,750. Discounted Price: $425 (Offers considered) Frank
T. Bullen. The Cruise of the Cachalot. A Fine copy of this book (a touch
of darkening to the upper spine and a small light area to the bottom of the
front board beneath the illustration) with bright gilt lettering to the
spine and front board and a crisp illustration (in paint) of whaler's in
pursuit of their prey to the front board. With a laid-in advertising slip
in which Appleton offers to send their Spring Announcement Number of their
Monthly Bulletin upon the mailing in of the completed slip. As a youth,
Bullen set sail on several whaling ships and wrote this celebrated account
based on his own experiences at sea. Many readers have argued that Bullen's
book is superior to the now more famed Moby Dick. Of this book, Kipling
wrote to Bullen: "It is immense-there is no other word. I've never read
anything that equals it in its deep-sea wonder and mystery; nor do I think
that any book before has so completely covered the whole business of
whale-fishing, and at the same time given such real and new sea pictures.
You have thrown away material enough to make five books, and I congratulate
you most heartily. It is a new world that you've opened the door to." A
