[Horace:] Quintus Horatius Flaccus; Ad lectiones probatiores diligenter emendatus, et interpunctione nova saepius illustratus. Editio quarta. Glasguae [Glasgow]: in aedibus academicis excudebant Robertus et Andreas Foulis academiae typographi, MDCCLX [1760]. Small 4to (20 cm) in early/period polished calf, rebacked in modern calf; [2], xii, 307, [1] pp. (with pages 20 (C2v) and 24 (C4v) swapped, as usual); with the half-title page. Gaskell 383; ESTC T46249.

The wide-margined "large paper" quarto edition of this handsome production from the legendary Foulis Press, which also issued a smaller, octavo version in the same year. Robert Foulis was appointed printer to the University of Glasgow in 1743, where he was soon joined by his younger brother Andrew. For more than thirty years the Foulis brothers were engines of the Scottish Enlightenment, issuing important, finely printed works noted for their editorial meticulousness and classically simple elegance..

Original boards a bit bumped and worn at the corners; leaves with some dimpling to the margins, occasional faint spots and light touches of soiling, two leaves with penciled (erasable) marginal notes by an early owner, else clean and crisp, firmly bound. Front paste-down with the bookplate of noted English bibliophile Charles Benson.
