Perspectives on Richard Ford [SIGNED BY RICHARD FORD]

*Guagliardo, Huey [Editor and Contributor]; [Ford, Richard]; Holditch, W.
Kenneth; Funk, Robert N.; Dupuy, Edward; Hobson, Fred; Leter, Priscilla;
Walker, Elinor Ann; Folks, Jeffrey J.; and Chernecky, William G.*
University Press of Mississippi, Jackson, Mississippi, 2000. Hardcover.
Condition: Fine. First Edition, First Printing. A Fine, Superior, copy of
the first edition, first printing [no dust jacket -- as issued]; a
collection of nine Essays on Richard Ford, issued simultaneously in
paperback and hardcover, with the hardcover copies being by far the scarcer
of the two. This copy has been SIGNED BY RICHARD FORD on the first page of
Guagliardo's "A Conversation with Richard Ford" (page 177 of the book). As
noted, hardcover copies of the book are not common, and, in our experience,
HARDCOVER COPIES SIGNED BY RICHARD FORD ARE AS SCARCE AS HEN'S TEETH. A
Fine, Superior, hardcover copy, SIGNED BY RICHARD FORD.

In the Night Kitchen

*Sendak, Maurice*
Harper & Row, New York, 1970. Hardcover. Condition: Very good +. Dust
Jacket Condition: very good. First Edition, First Printing. A Very Good +
or better copy of the first edition, first printing (small stain to the
front board's lower portion -- otherwise Fine with a prior owner's name to
the front free endpaper), in a Very Good or better corner-clipped first
issue dust jacket properly priced at $4.95 with general rubbing); Sendak's
richly-illustrated tale of a young boy's dream journey through a surreal
baker's kitchen where he assists in the creation of a cake to be ready by
the coming morning. The book was a 1971 Caldecott Honor book - 1971 being
the first year in which such award was given (and later issue dust jackets
have the Caldecott Honor Medal affixed to the dust jacket). The book was
originally banned (due to the depiction of a portion of the boy's anatomy)
and is ranked 25th by the American Library Association on its "100 most
frequently challenged books of 1990-2000". Notably, as the cake's
ingredients are being assembled, the boy falls into the cake's batter and
emerges just as the preparation is being put into the oven. Sendak later
stated that the fact that the bakers tried to cook the boy in their ovens
was a reference to the Holocaust and that the story also dealt with the
things that happen after a child goes to bed. A rather nice copy of this
title often found rather worn.

The Risk Pool [Unrevised Proofs]

*Russo, Richard*

Random House, New York, 1988. Wrappers. Condition: Very good. First
Edition, First Printing. An about Very Good copy of the Unrevised Proofs
[Uncorrected Proofs] for the first edition, first printing, in the
Publisher's original yellow wrappers [askew, general edge wear, modest
soiling to the wrappers, wear to the spine tail, short tear to the front
wrapper's upper edge and to the front free endpaper and half-title), SIGNED
BY RICHARD RUSSO on the half-title; Richard Russo's second novel, a
coming-of-age novel set in Russo's fictional town of Mohawk, a dying town
set in New York. The New York Times described the novel as a "superbly
original, maliciously funny book", and praised Russo's "brilliant, deadpan
writing." The Proof copy of the novel is quite scarce to the market in any
condition and SIGNED COPIES OF IT ARE EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE INDEED.

Ben's Dream

*Van Allsburg, Chris*

Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1982. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust
Jacket Condition: fine. First Edition, First Printing. A Fine copy of the
first edition, first printing, in a Very Good or better dust jacket with
some minor edge rubbing and a couple of closed tears to the spine (with
tape repairs to the verso/inside), written and illustrated by Chris Van
Allsburg; rain begins to fall as a young fellow, Ben, studies for his
Geography test on the world's great monuments. He falls asleep, flood
waters cause his house to float away, and he floats around the world and
passes by great monuments -- illustrations of which were in the book he had
been studying. Allsburg's illustrations of what Ben sees in his dream hint
of meanings beyond those shown in his book. The question for Ben and the
reader is: What is real and what is not? First editions, first printings,
of this early Allsburg book (his third) in the priced dust jacket and in a
condition as nice as is this copy are RATHER SCARCE TO THE MARKET.

Jacket Condition: fine. First Edition, First Printing. A Fine copy of the
first edition, first printing (spine tail lightly askew), in a Fine dust

Introduction attributes the illustrations to Harris Burdick). The book
presents a series of thirteen images, each accompanied by a title and a
single line of text, all designed to prompt the reader to create his or her
own story out of them. First editions, first printings, of this early
Allsburg book (his fifth book, a work immediately preceding "The Polar
Express") in the priced dust jacket and in a condition as nice as is this
copy are RATHER SCARCE TO THE MARKET.

/ a consistent admirer of Brooke Allen's Literary essays in / the New

/ heart. // With warmest good wishes, / Cynthia Ozick". The letter is
housed in an unsealed envelope whereupon Ozick has written "Cynthia O." at
the upper front left corner and "Mr. Ken Hubner" just below the front
center. A Very Good or better copy of the first edition with a EXCELLENTLY
INSCRIBED BY OZICK, TOGETHER WITH A WONDERFUL COMPANION LETTER WRITTEN
ENTIRELY IN OZICK'S HAND WHICH INCLUDES AN UNSURPRISINGLY INSIGHTFUL
CONCLUDING OBSERVATION.

The Eye of the Story: Selected Essays and Reviews

*Welty, Eudora*

* Random House, New York, 1978. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket
Condition: fine. First Edition, First Printing. A Fine, Superior, copy of
the first edition, first printing, in a Fine dust jacket (slight marking to
the spine panel verso / inside) without the sunning to the front panel (and
very little of it to the) spine lettering that so often is found on copies
of this book (tiny bend line to the front flap's upper right corner); an
EXCEPTIONAL COPY. [Please note: the proper first edition publication is
1978, not "1977" as sometimes stated.] [The sunning to the orange letter is
less that it appears to be in the images and has been accentuated in the
images by the camera's flash.] A Quite nice copy. *
