This is the "second edition" (see below) in English of the first part of DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA. A second part, also in 2 volumes was published in 1840. The American first edition did not appear until 1838, and did not contain a map.
Although the title page reads "second edition" this is in fact the first edition, second printing. Both are exactly the same, printed from the same setting of type. The translator didn't finish his translation from the French until June of 1835. The first English edition (printing) appearing in the last quarter of 1835 with that year on the title page. Demand for the book required a second printing just months into 1836, appearing with "second edition" on the title page. Howes T278; Sabin 96062.
