La Divina Commedia Or The Divine Vision of Dante Alighieri In Italian and
English [The Divine Comedy] by Dante Alighieri [ca. 1265-1321]. The
Italian text edited by Mario Casella of the University of Florence with
the English version of H.F. Cary and 42 illustrations after the drawings
of Sandro Botticelli. Printed on Van Gelder paper.
The pictures have been reproduced from Botticelli's drawings measuring
each 18 1/2 by 12 1/2 inches in Berlin and Rome. The text has been printed
by the Westminster Press in Poiphilus Roman Capital letters and Blado
Italic small letters; the pictures have been printed by Daniel Jacomet.
Contains the entire Commedia: The Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.
[London]: The Nonesuch Press 1928. Limited Edition of 1475 copies, this
being no. 1039. Folio (12 1/2" x 8 1/4"). (iv.) , 324 (328) pp. Bound in
full orange vellum fine leather with gilt ruled borders, gilt lettering &
decorations on boards & spine. Top edge gilt, but very darkened. Many of
the Botticelli sketches are double page. The Italian/English text is in
double columns.

Very Good condition. Vellum boards are quite warped from the leather
drying over the years, as is usually found with this edition. Spine is
sun-faded, as is also usual for this book when not protected in a box.
Some finger soiling and a few small spots can be seen on the delicate
covers, as well as rubbing at corners and edges. Fine heavy handmade laid
paper of contents is somewhat age-toned. No foxing or spotting as often
found, though the rear end paper is darkened. No previous owner's name or
marks. Gilt top edge is very darkened (we know this book was shelved next
to a fireplace in its former residence manor house) and the untrimmed side
and bottom edge are age dusted.
All Botticelli plates are present and lovely.
