Agrippa, Henricus Cornelius. THE VANITY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES. London: Printed by J. C. for Samuel Speed. 1676. 8vo. (18),368pp. Index. Copper engraved frontispiece portrait. Cont. calf, rebacked with an elaborately gilt tooled spine, red morocco spine label. 18th century bookplate of William Wollascott. A very nice copy.    $1,250.00 (trade discount allowed)
Scarce first edition of a new English translation (after the 2 editions in 1569 and 1575, which were translated by James Sanford), the translator not being named. A very popular Latin text in the 16th & 17th centuries. It is a sarcastic attack on the existing sciences and the pretensions of learned men. Agrippa (1486-1535) wrote this work in Latin about 1527. It was first published in Antwerp in 1531. Wing A790.
