*Description*

The First edition of William Duncan's celebrated translation of Caesar's
Commentaries, COMPLETE WITH 86 PLATES, including the FRONTISPIECE OF CAESAR
ANN THE FAMED DOUBLE- PAGE BULL PLATE which often missing, a volume in
which "The ablest Commander of the most warlike People on Earth entertains
You with the History of his own Campaigns. You are informed of the Motives
which determined him in all his Enterprises, of the various Difficulties he
had to encounter, and of the Steps by which in the end he was enabled to
surmount all Opposition. In a Word, Prudence in Counsel, Courage and
Intrepidity in the Field, a calm Presence of Mind in the midst of Dangers,
and an amazing Dexterity in sudden and unforeseen Emergencies, are here
exemplified in the Conduct of a Leader, whom all succeeding Ages have
agreed to regard as the most finished Pattern of military Merit." --
William Duncan. At the time this listing was composed, there were only two
other copies on the market, this being the only complete copy. The
full-leather binding, the boards of which are double-lined, and the
buttressed spine of which is decorated in gilt, is in somewhat worn and in
Good condition only, with the front board being detached and the rear board
being nearly detached. The textual pages themselves are in at least Very
Good to Very Good + condition with some scattered spotting and a few closed
margin tears (as well as a stamp to the title page's top margin reading, in
all capital letters, "Ste. Remnant / Woolrich"). The Plates are likewise in
at least Very Good to Very Good + condition with three of them showing a
closed tear or two at the folds and the Battle of the Elephants shows some
additional tears. Thus, while this copy needs rebinding it has the great
virtue of being A COMPLETE COPY WITH ALL 86 PLATES (on 85 sheets) CALLED
FOR BY THE ENGLISH SHORT TITLE CATALOGUE. The Collation is as follows:
front free endpaper, Frontispiece of Caesar, [followed by 12 unnumbered
pages - including title page],civ,335, followed by an Index of Ancient and
Modern Geography to Caesar's Commentaries comprising 11 pages, followed by
an Index of Persons and Things comprising 9 pages, followed by blank rear
free endpaper), together with the called-for 86 Plates (which includes the
maps and the FAMOUS BULL PLATE) some of which double page. [ESTC calls for
86 plates -- see ESTC Citation No. T136453]. The book contains A Dedication
to His Royal Highness George Prince of Wales; An Advertisement (describing
the book); A Discourse Concerning the Roman Art of War; C. Julius Caesar's
Commentaries of His Wars in Gaul; A Continuation of Caesar's Commentaries
of His Wars in Gaul by A. Hirtius Pansa; Caesar's Commentaries of the Civil
War; A Hirtius Pansa's Commentaries of the Alexandrian War; A Hirtius
Pansa's Commentaries of the African War; A Hirtius Pansa's Commentaries of
the Spanish War; Index of Ancient and Modern Geography to Caesar's
Commentaries; and Index of Persons and Things, and he aforementioned
Plates. Having a nice Provenance, this copy belonged to Harry Vernon who
served as a Member of Parliament for East Worcestershire and resided at
Hanbury Hall, and his bookplate is affixed to the volume's front pastedown.
A QUITE DIFFICULT TO FIND COMPLETE COPY OF THIS CELEBRATED BOOK.
