*Description*

PA Very Good copy of the RARE TO THE MARKET FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING
of Descriptiones Tabulorum Marinorum : In Qvorum Censum Relati Lapides
Caudæ Cancri Gesneri, & his similes; Belemnitæ ; Eorumqve Alveoli. Secundum
Ddispositionem Musei Kleiniani : addita est Dissertatio epistolaris de
pilis marinis : cum figuris; complete with all 10 illustrations to the
rear. Jacob Theodor Klein (1685 - 1759) was a German Botanist, Zoologist,
Mathematician, Historian, and Jurist, as well as a Diplomat in service to
Polish King August II the Strong. Klein's work in natural science was
highly-regarded, and he was awarded membership in a number of scientific
societies, including in The President, Council and Fellows of the Royal
Society of London for Improving Knowledge (generally referred to as the
"Royal Society" -- a Society which still exists and the purpose of which is
to promote science and its benefits, recognize excellence in science,
support outstanding science, provide scientific advice of policy, foster
international and global cooperation, and to provide education and public
engagement) and in the Danzig Research Society, a highly-regarded Society
founded in Danzig by Daniel Gralath (1708 - 1767), Jacob Theodor Klein's
son-in-law. Notable members included Nathanael Matthaeus von Wolf, Michael
Christoph Hanow, Gottfried Lengnich, Johann Jacob Mascov, and Daniel
Gabriel Farenheit. While the book 117 WorldCat member libraries in various
forms, WorldCat reveals only 21 copies of the 1731 first edition held in
book form. A well-received and notable work, at least 31 editions were
published beginning with the first edition in 1731. Given that WorldCat
shows relatively few copies from the 1700s being held in book form -- and
only 21 copies of the first edition, first printing being held in book form
-- we conclude that the first edition was not published in large numbers.
Not only being SCARCE, this copy has a REMARKABLE PROVENANCE having
belonged to Charles Atwood Kofoid (1865-1947) the prominent American
zoologist known for his collection and classification of many new species
of marine protozoans which established marine biology on a systematic
basis. An interesting Biographical Memoir of Kofoid by Richard B.
Goldschmidt was published by the National Academy of Sciences. His
bookplate graces the volume's front pastedown. The book thereafter belonged
to John Sinkankas, a noted gemologist, gem carver and gem faceter, as well
as the author of numerous books and articles on minerals and gemstones.
Sinkankas also was a bookseller and bibliographer of rare books. His signed
bookplate also is affixed (with that of Charles Atwood Kofind) to the front
pastedown. A REMARKABLE COPY OF A SCARCE AND NOTABLE BOOK. IMAGES AVAILABLE
UPON REQUEST.

*Description*

A Very Good + copy of the first edition, later printing of this very rare
botanical work describing one hundred woody plants, with fruit and flowers
growing wild in German, containing 100 beautiful illusctrations engraved
and drawn by G.F. Abel, a Stuttgart artist and engraver. The basic text
provides a key to the plates, which are titled beneath each subject with
their Latin binomial and the common name in German. resentation of the
plates is unusual in the use of shadows which are employed to lift the
samples from the page and further the illusion of reality. Reitter, a
botanist and forester was the Würtemberg 'Hofjäger' from 1780-1793 and also
taught forestry at Hohenheim. He was a forestry commissioner at Stuttgart
from 1794-1801 and with the Würtemberger forestry department from
1803-1811. BOUND TOGETHER WITH the first edition, first printing, of

25 beautiful illustrations engraved and drawn by G.F. Abel. The
illustrations are in nice condition with some modest soiling, marking, and
toning. EACH TITLE IS EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE TO THE MARKET.

*Description*

PRESENTLY DISCOUNTED. WAS $7,500. RARE: ORIGINAL PLANS FOR AN ADDITION TO
SKERRYVORE, Robert Louis Stevenson's home in Bournemouth where he had the
famous dream which inspired his great work "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and
Mr. Hyde", which tale, among other great works, he wrote at Skerryvore. The
Plans were prepared in 1900 for Heywood Sumner, Esq., a successor in
ownership, for the addition of a Studio to the house. [Heywood Sumner --
George Heywood Maunoir Sumner -- was the well-known English painter,
illustrator and art-craftsman who was closely involved with the Arts and
Crafts movement and the late-Victorian London art world. Sumner, who was
qualified as a Barrister, also employed much of his time as an amateur
archaeologist, geologist, naturalist, and folklorist.] Skerryvore, whose
lawns ran down from the house to Alum Chine Road, is where Stevenson lived
from 1884 until his departure for Samoa (where he died in 1894). Thus, the
Plans were prepared soon after his departure and show the house as it
existed when Stevenson owned it, together with the proposed Studio
addition. A "wedding present" from Stevenson's father to Stevenson and his
wife, Fanny, four years after their marriage -- most likely the father's
attempt to keep his peripatetic son near to him in his last years --
Stevenson came to ownership of it upon his father's death in 1887. Named
after "Skerryvore", the tallest lighthouse in Scotland and one designed by
his uncle, Alan Stevenson, who, like Stevenson's father, was a leading
lighthouse engineer, the house was destroyed by German bombs on November
16, 1940. There now stands in its place a memorial garden containing a
statue of the lighthouse for which the home was named. With some tears and
minor loss, these ORIGINAL PLANS are in quite nice condition overall, are
unique to the market, and likely comprise the only plans for this important
house available, or hereafter likely to be available, for purchase. An
important record of Stevenson's house, a LITERARY LANDMARK, and a rare
opportunity for the Collector. RARE INDEED [PLEASE NOTE: Buyer's shipping
cost for this item will exceed the shipping cost quoted by this site.]

*Description*

TEMPORARILY REDUCED. WAS $7,500. A Fine, Superior copy of the first
edition, first printing of this Album issued in commemoration of the death
of Emperor Maximilian of Mexico and containing poems and chromolithographs
of the palaces and places where the Emperor lived, such as a view of the
Castle of Chapultepec and the Miramar Palace, among other images, made by
the German master engraver Hermine Stilke, in a Fine dust jacket (minor
repairs to the front flap, library sticker remnant to the spine panel, some
toning, shadow from the rear board decoration apparent on the jacket's rear
panel -- showing that the book has worn this jacket for quite a long period
of time), covered and protected by a yellow overjacket which shows wrinkles
and folds -- housed in a Very Good or better example of the ORIGINAL BOX
(general wear and soiling, but less than one might expect -- with some
splitting to the corners.) The volume's boards and gilt titling to the
front board are remarkably and brilliantly bright and, but for some tiny
rubs to the spine ends and board corners, and wear to the spine's inside
hinge, are unworn. The book contains a front free endpaper followed by a
half title, each of which is affixed to the binding, followed by a
concluding Poem and rear free endpaper, each of which also are affixed to
the binding. Between the above-described pages, each leaf is loosely laid
in, printed on thick stock, and has all edges gilded. The leaves consist of
the CHROMOLITHOGRAPHIC TITLE PAGE illustrated by the renowned Artist
Hermine Stilke, the title page, a dedication page to Kiser Franz Josef I
(whose brother, Maximillian -- the only monarch of the Second Mexican
Empire -- was executed in 1867), and SIX ADDITIONAL CHROMOLITHIC
ILLUSTRATIONS BY HERMINE STILKE (for a total of seven -- sieben -- such
Hermine Stilke chromolithic illustrtions). Each illustration is preceeded
by a Poem relevant to the Stilke illustration immediately following it.
Other than the free endpapers, the recto of each page in the book is
printed within a decorative border with each printed page's verso being
glossy and blank [excluding only the half-title page, the verso of which is
printed in all capital letters of various sizes as follows: "LEIPZEG /
GIESECKE & DEVRIENT / TYPOGR. INSTITUT."] The leaves are in quite nice
condition with only a bit of soiling and some oxidation spots, primarily to
the blank margins. Sophia Hermine Stilke, née Sophia Hermine Peipers
(1804-1869 in Berlin ), was a German illustrator and painter of the
Düsseldorf School, a group of painters educated in the 1890s, primarily at
the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts in Dusseldorf and a master engraver. The
wife of noted Artist Hermann Stilke, she was, of her own right, one of the
most notable female German artists of the 19th century and made a
successful career in book illustration. A REMARKABLE COPY in the ORIGINAL
BOX AND DUST JACKET. The book is RARE to the market and, with the dust
jacket and box, is seeminly impossible to find elsewhere. Our search of
Worldcat revealed only seven copies of the book. IN THE DUST JACKET AND
BOX, THE BOOK IS A RARE SURVIVAL. A FINE, BEAUTIFUL, COPY AND RARE INDEED.
