AUSTEN, Jane. NORTHANGER ABBEY: AND PERSUASION. London: John Murray,
1818. First Edition. Four volumes (4-1/2" x 6-7/8") bound in
contemporary calf-backed marbled boards with contrasting stamped morocco
spine labels; half-title page present in the first volume only.
NORTHANGER ABBEY, Austen's sophisticated parody of the Gothic novel, was
in fact her first completed work, written in the late 1790s. PERSUASION
was the last novel she wrote, and this posthumous publication was the
first publication of both titles. This was also her only four-volume
publication; all previous works were issued in "triple-deckers." Early,
neat, small ink owner name on the title page of each volume. Occasional
light foxing with perhaps a handful of pages with some small stains but
a clean, fresh copy. The contemporary bindings are generally quite nice
with some minor splitting along the edges and mild chipping to the tops
of the spines. The primary defect is the leather peeling from the bottom
of the spine of the first volume about an inch. A Very Good, unrestored
example. (#018698)        $8,500.00
