DOUGLASS, Frederick. NARRATIVE OF THE LIFE OF FREDERICK DOUGLASS, AN
AMERICAN SLAVE, WRITTEN BY HIMSELF. Boston: Anti-Slavery Office, 1845.
First Edition. Original blindstamped black cloth with gilt lettering on
the front cover, the spine expertly rebacked with brown morocco leather;
xvi, 125 pages. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Douglass.
Preface by William Lloyd Garrison and printing a letter by Wendell
Phillips. Douglass's first book and the preeminent slave narrative of
the 19th century. Just seven years after his escape from slavery,
Douglass published this powerful account of his life in bondage and his
triumph over oppression. This title marks the beginning of Douglass's
career as an impassioned writer and orator for the abolitionist cause,
revealing the terrors he faced as a slave, the brutalities of his owners
and overseers, and his harrowing escape to the North. And of course, who
could forget Donald Trump's praise of this great American: "Frederick
Douglass is an example of somebody who's done an amazing job and is
being recognized more and more, I notice." Scattered minor soiling and
foxing to the contents; tissue guard for frontispiece lacking; early
owner inscription on the front endpaper. Some edgewear to the boards.
Very Good. (#018695) $7,500.00
