*Description*

A Very Good + copy of the first edition -- issued in the year immediately
following the earliest dated copies of the first printing (1873), in the
Publisher's original cloth with the page block's closed edges spotted as
called for (oxidation to a portion of the spine decoration and lettering,
professional repair to each board's leading corners and tiny expert repairs
to the spine overhangs, hinges (interior) expertly repaired, slight
professional repair to the front and rear free endpapers -- otherwise
Fine); a fictional novel that gave its name to an American era, written by
Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain) together with his friend, American Essayist
and Novelist Charles Dudley Warner -- the only book where Twain had a
co-author. BAL notes: "This book exists in an unknown number of variants;
the total must be staggering. However, the earliest copies have the
following features:" and then goes on to specify those features. While the
copyright for our copy is 1873, the title page is dated 1874, rather than
the BAL preferred 1873, but otherwise contains almost all of the features
of the first state of the text and has the so-called "genuine" title page:
includes "White" among the illustrators and names "Lockwood" as the book's
electrotyper on the copyright page. This copy also meets almost all of the
other required features for the earliest copies: the final illustration in
the "List of Illustrations" is numbered "211" rather than "212" as later
corrected. "Eschol Sellers" is stated where required [rather than the later
"Beriah Sellers"]; there is no comma after "Hallelujah" on page 246; a
period appears after "Jackson" on page 280; page 352, last two lines are as
specified by BAL for the earliest printings and for later printings as
well; no illustration appears on page 403. Our copy has only one feature of
later printings: corrected state of the text on pages 351 and 353. Also,
this copy is bound in dark brown cloth rather than in the black cloth
specified by BAL. It is of additional interest that there is an
illustration facing page 520 (captioned "COL. SELLERS AND WASHINGTON RETURN
HOME AFTER THE VOTE." that is not called for in the List of Illustrations.
Also, the fold-out map located at page 246 [titled "MAP OF THE SALT LICK
BRANCH OF THE PACIFIC R. R."), frequently found worn and/or torn, is in
near perfect condition (with only a few edge wrinkles) and thus may have
been opened only by us. The exact first date of publication of the book is
unknown. However, the Prospectus for the book was available in October,
1873 and the book was certainly available for purchase by Christmas of that
year -- as shown by contemporary inscriptions on some copies of the book.
The book was listed in Publisher's Weekly on January 3, 1874. These facts,
taken together, give an indication of why the present copy, with so many
features of the earliest printings, is dated "1874" rather than "1873", and
is certainly an early printing of this work, and an attractive copy of MARK
TWAIN'S DEBUT NOVEL. RATHER UNCOMMON WITH THE ABOVE FEATURES -- AND PERHAPS
SCARCE.
