[Trelawney Wentworth:] The West India Sketch Book. London: Printed for Whittaker & Co., 1834. FIRST EDITION. Two volumes, 8vo (18.5 cm), in early rose-colored calf, gilt-tooled spines and gilt-lettered morocco spine labels; marbled endpapers and page edges; [2], x, 324 pp.; vi, [2], 391, [1] pp.; in-text engravings and musical notations.

Lacking the plates. Bindings with rubbing and wear to the edges, sunning to the spines, partial loss to one spine label; early presentation inscription to the front free-endpaper; contents with a few small scattered light spots, else quite clean and bright. In addition to the author’s extensive observations on slavery, the work includes descriptions of the Virgin Islands, Saint Kitts, Antigua, Monserrat, Barbados, Saint Vincent, the “French Islands”, Negro dialogue, Negro Soirees, Costume of the Negroes, Chegoes, Mulattos and Free Negroes, Natural Magic, Monkeys, Taverns, Bull Hunting, etc., etc.
