A policy renewal receipt issued in Grenada in 1814 by the PHOENIX FIRE-INSURANCE COMPANY OF LONDON to the "Heirs of David Linton." Blanks filled in ink and signed by the company's agent, "W. Mitchell[?]". Measures 20 x 9 cm (ca. 8 x 3.5 in); light bumping to the edges, vertical crease at the center, otherwise clean and bright.

Four years later, the August, 1818, issue of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine has the following note in its Registry of Deaths: "July 19, at Ayr, age 13, Mary Riddel, daughter of the late Dr. David Linton, physician in the island of Grenada." The Phoenix Fire Insurance Co. was established in 1782 by London sugar refiners seeking lower rates to insure their merchandise against loss due to dock and warehouse fires. It opened its first agency in the New World in 1804, in New York. This must be a fairly early survivor of its Caribbean operations.
