*Description*

A Fine, Bright, Superior, copy of the first edition, first printing (tiny
crack to the rear hinge - internal - of Volume 1), in Fine dust jackets
(with modest wear), complete with the RARE original warehouse storage box
(with the bottom panel separated, one seam split, and the front panel
cracked -- all easily repairable by a binder) -- being A REMARKABLE AND
TRULY RARE SURVIVAL COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL BOX AND DUST JACKETS,
TOGETHER WITH THE EXCEEDINGLY RARE PUBLICITY SHEET loosely laid in. A
person of wide-ranging ability, Lew Wallace was, at various times, a lawyer
in private practice, the prosecuting attorney of Indiana's 1st
Congressional District, a Union General in the American Civil War, the
Governor of the New Mexico Territory, a Major General in the Mexican Army,
the U.S. minister to the Ottoman Empire, a member of the military
commission that investigated the Lincoln assassination conspirators, and a
Best-Selling Author. [In America's Civil War, Wallace attained the rank of
Major General, participated in the Battle of Fort Donelson, the Battle of
Shiloh, and the Battle of Monocacy, and on June 12, 1861, led his Regiment
to victory in a seemingly minor battle at Romney, Virginia .... in
present-day West Virginia. The rout was rather notable in that the victory
gave a much-needed morale boost to Union troops and led to the Confederate
evacuation of Harpers Ferry on June 18.] Wallace wrote a number of novels,
including "Ben-Hur" -- which became the best-selling American novel of the
19th century, surpassing Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin".
However, Wallace considered "The Prince of India" to be his best novel.
This is a remarkable copy of that novel, not only because of its beautiful
condition, but also because each Volume wears its dust jacket and the set
resides in the original storage box. ONLY TWO SUCH COPIES ARE KNOWN TO
EXIST. [We also handled the other copy.] The viewer will notice, of course,
that, being from the period when jackets typically were used not to sell
books but only to keep books clean until put out for sale, the dust jackets
are plain. [Virtually all of the dust jackets for the novel would have been
discarded.] The viewer also will see that the spine of each dust jacket is
pinch-torn to reveal each volume's number (I and II) — a common warehouse
practice — which would have made verifying that both volumes comprising the
novel were present within the storage box an easy process for the person
retrieving the books from the storage shelf. Furthermore, the dust jackets
from the period also often lacked the decoration one sees on
later-published books. Such jackets also often did not show one or all of
the title, the author, or the publisher — all three being absent from these
dust jackets. As the box has a label, it was not necessary to disturb the
dust jackets -- other than to pinch-tear them to show the each Volume
number -- as the author and title are show on the storage box label, making
locating the set on the warehouse shelves easier than would otherwise have
been the case. While the term "Rare" is overused when describing books,
this copy of the novel, is TRULY RARE -- WITH ONLY TWO SUCH COPIES KNOWN TO
EXIST IN THE DUST JACKETS -- and even RARER IN THE STORAGE BOX, making this
copy a PART OF BOOK HISTORY and AN IMPORTANT COPY as well and coming with
the original publicity sheet. A REMARKABLE SURVIVOR OF BIBLIOGRAPHIC
IMPORTANCE; A GENUINE RARITY.
