DANIELL, Thomas and DANIELL, William. A PICTURESQUE VOYAGE TO INDIA; BY
THE WAY OF CHINA. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 1810. First
Edition. Oblong folio (13-1/4" x 9") bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in
polished calf-backed marbled boards with calf corners, spine with five
raised bands and gilt decorations, gilt-lettered morocco spine labels.
Illustrated with 50 lovely hand-colored aquatint plates by Thomas and
William Daniell, on heavy card stock, with letterpress captions
watermarked "Whatman 1808" on facing pages. Included are views of Java
(including shark fishing), Macao, Canton, Madeira, the Cape of Good
Hope, Malaysia, Calcutta, and the Bay of Bengal, with 22 plates
dedicated to Chinese subjects, including "Chinese Trading & Fishing
Vessels." One of the most celebrated books on the scenery of China and
India. Some age-toning and very light foxing in places, a few leaves
with short marginal tears (less than 1/2"), minor and occasional soiling
or staining, mostly marginal, bookplate on front pastedown; overall
clean and attractive. Light wear to edges, a few small scuffs. Near Fine.

The Daniells left England in April 1785 and arrived in Whampoa, China,
where they would spend several months before continuing on to India.
Approximately half of the illustrations focus on China, and the
accompanying text includes observations and descriptions of native
peoples (Abbey Travel 516; Tooley 173). (#018995) $10,000.00
