Francois [Ferenc] Baron de Tott: Memoires du Baron de Tott, sur les Turcs et les Tartares. Amsterdam: [s.n.], 1784-85. Four parts in two volumes, complete; 8vo (20 cm) in early/period sheep, gilt-lettered spine labels; xl, 203, [1] pp.; [4], 210 pp.; [4], 180 pp.; [4], 152 pp.; woodcut tile-page vignettes and head-pieces.

The baron de Tott (1733-1793) was a French military officer and diplomat. Upon first traveling to Constantinople as the secretary of his uncle the comte de Vergennes, de Tott learned Turkish and made the political situation in the Crimea his special study. Returning to Crimea in 1767 as French consul, he incited the Tartars to rebel against Imperial Russia and subsequently played a significant role on the side of the Ottoman Empire during the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774. Bindings with wear to the edges, some rubbing and spotting, small areas of abrasion with loss to the rear boards; contents lightly toned with occasional small spots, else clean and sound, firmly bound. An attractive set.
