Sir Archibald Edmonstone: A Journey to Two of the Oases of Upper Egypt. London: John Murray, 1822. First edition; 8vo (23.5 cm), untrimmed in original publisher's boards, recently rebacked to style, printed spine label; xv, [3], 152 pp.; folding map and 12 plates (complete); with the half-title page and errata slip.
Surprisingly uncommon account of this young, wealthy, British adventurer-explorer's travels in Egypt's Western Desert. Edmonstone was the first European to visit the Dakhla oasis, arriving there only ten days before his rival explorer, the French consul Bernardino Drovetti. The plates include views and plans of ruins.
Original boards with some staining, wear and dings to the edges and corners; shadows of old cellophane tape repairs to the last leaf, half-title, and edges of the rear board; ex-lib bookplate to the rear paste-down and small inked numeral to the verso of the title-page (no other library markings); toning and occasional damp-staining to the untrimmed edges of the text block, some offsetting and spotting to and from the frontispiece map, scattered light spotting to the contents, else quite clean and sound, firmly bound.
