J. S. Buckingham: Travels in Mesopotamia. Including a Journey from Aleppo to Bagdad, by the Route of Beer, Orfah, Diarbekr, Marden, & Mousul; with Researches on the Ruins of Nineveh, Babylon, and Other Ancient Cities. London: Henry Colburn, 1827. First edition thus. Two volumes, 8vo (22 cm), in early/period half calf and marbled boards, marbled page edges; xx, 479 pp.; [iii]-vi, 538, [2] pp.; leaf of publisher's adverts at the end of vol. II; with a folding engraved map, 2 double-page lithographs, and 27 woodcut plates.
The first octavo edition, published the same year as the single-volume quarto edition. Bindings rubbed, bumping and wear to the edges and corners; joints and hinges repaired, but tender; shadows of old cellophane tape repairs to the boards and one leaf of vol. I. Deaccessioned from the (masonic) library of the Wisconsin Consistory, with its bookplate on the front paste-downs, small ink stamp on the verso of the title-pages (no other library markings). Early owner's signature on titles, offsetting and spotting to the folding map and lithographs, occasional light spotting to the leaves, otherwise quite clean and sound, firmly bound.
