[John Corry:] The English Metropolis; or, London in the Year 1820. Containing Satirical Strictures of Public Manners, Morals, and Amusements; A Young Gentleman's Adventures; and Characteristic Anecdotes of Several Eminent Individuals Who Now Figure in this Great Theatre of Temporary Exhibition. By the Author of A Satirical View of London. London: Printed by Barnard and Farley; and sold by Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, 1820. First edition. Tall 8vo (23 cm), untrimmed, in later half crimson morocco and marbled boards; vi, 320 pp.
An eccentric, contrarian, and genuinely amusing look at Regency London. Includes observations on Byron and Coleridge, Leigh Hunt and John Cam Hobhouse, the General Election, Quackery, the Art of Puffing, English Newspapers, Public Amusements, etc. etc. A few occasional small spots and touches of soiling to the leaves, toning to the untrimmed edges, else clean and sound, firmly and attractively bound. Rather uncommon.
