[FINE BINDINGS] GAUTIER, Theophile. LE PAVILLON SUR L'EAU. Paris:
Librairie des Amateurs, A. Ferroud, 1900. Limited Edition. Large octavo
(6-1/4" x 9-1/2") attractively bound by A. Cuzin in full mustard morocco
leather, the boards with leather inlays of lily pads, flowers, and
butterflies; gilt dentelles; marbled endpapers; all edges gilt. Of a
total of 350 copies, this is #31 of 80 printed on "papier du Japan ou
grand velin d'Arches," with lovely color illustrations by Henri Caruchet
interleaved with an additional suite of the illustrations on chine
before letters. Gautier's translation of The Water Pavilion from Chinese
to French in 1846 was, while not the first, one of the earliest.
Armorial bookplate of Mexborough on the front pastedown. A few scuffs to
the spine and edges. Near Fine.

Gautier wrote plays, poetry, novels, short stories, and theater
criticism. His most famous work is MADEMOISELLE DE MAUPIN, an historical
romance based on the life of French opera star Mlle Maupin, who was a
first-rate swordswoman and often went about disguised as a man. Another
well-known work is his short story "La Morte Amoureuse," the story of a
priest who falls in love with a beautiful woman who turns out to be a
vampire. (#017824) $1,000.00
