McINTOSH, Charles. FLORA AND POMONA; OR THE BRITISH FRUIT AND FLOWER
GARDEN; CONTAINING DESCRIPTIONS OF THE MOST VALUABLE AND INTERESTING
FLOWERS AND FRUITS, CULTIVATED IN THE GARDENS OF GREAT BRITAIN, WITH
FIGURES DRAWN AND COLOURED FROM NATURE. ACCOMPANIED BY A CONSISE
ANALYSIS OF THEIR BOTANICAL AND POMONOLOGICAL CHARACTER, THEIR NATURE
AND MODE OF CULTURE, INCLUDING A DEFINITION OF THE TECHNICAL TERMS USED
IN THE SCIENCE OF BOTANY, WITH FAMILIAR INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE DRAWING AND
COLOURING OF THE FRUITS AND FLOWERS. London: Thomas Kelly, 1829. First
Edition. Octavo (5-1/4" x 8-1/2") in contemporary tree calf leather with
gilt rules and gilt-decorated spine with a gilt-lettered red morocco
spine label. Illustrated with 71 lovely hand-colored engraved plates,
one of which is folding. The plates, 36 of fruit and 35 of flowers, were
drawn by Edwin Dalton Smith and engraved by S. Watts and F. W. Smith. E.
D. Smith was well known as "a more considerable artist of small-scale
work..."(Blunt & Stern - ART OF BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION). Smith also did
drawings for Maund's BOTANIC GARDEN, as well as other works. His
excellent artistic skill is readily evident on all the plates in this
work by MacIntosh. Of particular note are the fruit plates, 12 of which
are of different apples. We found only two complete copies of this title
at auction in the last 40 years. Light, scattered foxing to the text,
the plates clean and bright with tissue guards present. Front joint with
some splitting but very tight. Near Fine and scarce.
