[Richard Graves, ed.:] The Festoon: A Collection of Epigrams, Ancient and Modern. Panegyrical, Satyrical, Amorous, Moral, Humorous, Monumental. With an Essay on that Species of Composition. London: Printed for Mess. Robinson and Roberts, at Addison's Head, Pater-Noster Row; and W. Frederick, at Bath, 1766 [but 1765?]. FIRST EDITION; 12mo (17 cm) in early/period full speckled calf, spine elaborately tooled in gilt, gilt-lettered morocco spine label, gilt borders on front and rear covers; xx, 200 pp.; engraved title-page vignette, woodcut decorations. ESTC T86025.

First edition of the first book by Graves, the future author of The Spiritual Quixote. Though dated 1766, ESTC suggests the book may have been published in 1765, as it was "announced in Lloyd's evening post December 16-18, 1765." Binding with modest rubbing to the edges, joints with some cracking at the ends but both boards are secure; first and last leaf with offsetting (browning) to the edges from the binder's glue, a few stray small spots to the contents. A very good or better copy, firmly and attractively bound. Front paste-down with the small label of noted book collector J. O. Edwards.
