[Michel] Adanson: A Voyage to Senegal, the Isle of Goree, and the River Gambia. By M. Adanson, Correspondent of the Royal Academy of Sciences. Translated from the French. With Notes by an English Gentleman, who resided some Time in that Country. London: Printed for J. Nourse, and W. Jonhston, 1759. First edition; 8vo (20.5 cm) in modern red morocco-backed cloth; xiii, [1], 337, [1] pp. ESTC T88426.

Lacking the map frontispiece, but with two additional hand-colored folding engraved maps of the period loosely laid in: Coste Occidentale d'Afrique depuis le Detroit de Gibraltar...Tiree de la Carte de l'Ocean Occidental publiee par ordre de Mgr. le Comte de Maurepas en 1738 (Paris: ca. 1740-1754) and An Accurate Map of Africa Drawn from the Sieur Robert with Improvements (London: ca. 1780). Contents with occasional mild toning and a few scattered small spots, first two leaves repaired at the gutter, else clean and sound, firmly bound.

First edition in English of Adanson's Histoire naturelle du Senegal, an account of the French naturalist's travels in Senegal from 1749-53, with observations on the botany and natural history of the region, but also descriptions of the dress, customs, superstitions and living conditions of the indigenous peoples.
