An early printing of this pioneer example of the Gothic novel, the urtext of the genre, and "the earliest effort to introduce supernaturalism and mystery into romance" (Kunitz & Haycraft). Binding with some wear to the edges and extremities, rear joint cracked with the board coming loose, front joint and hinge professionally repaired; scattered light spotting to the leaves.
