1905 Artistic Homes Design Catalog by Herbert C. Chivers of St. Louis.

An intriguing series of designs for modest and not-so-modest homes by
St. Louis architect Henry C. Chivers. Each page includes a line
rendering of the house in an appropriate landscape, a floor plan, and
technical details including construction cost estimates. “Today, the
reputation of Herbert Caleb Chivers is derived almost entirely from one
commission: his 1903 Women's Magazine Building extravaganza built for
the first Mayor of University City, Edward Gardner Lewis. In continuing
service as that city's City Hall since 1930, the building is still
remarkably intact even though the terra cotta cherubs that once graced
its roof line have been removed. Chivers would probably be dismayed to
discover his relative obscurity for he devoted considerable time and
talent to self-promotion. Chivers published a monthly called the Home
Builder, took out ads in City Directories and developed a far-flung mail
order business selling house plans. ’Artistic Homes’ is replete with
testimonials from former clients, admonitions from Chivers about the
value of using an architect and an essay on the City Beautiful” [Carolyn
Hewes Toft, Landmarks Association of St. Louis].

Softcover. 6”x9.25”, 160 pages, line illustrations. String-tied covers
chipped and worn, some soil to the pages, especially at the beginning
and end of the text block. This one has seen some hard living. A few
pencil notes. [46425] $150
