The first Irish edition, reprinted from 1778 first edition: "Carver penetrated farther into the West than any other English explorer before the Revolution" and "stimulated curiosity concerning routes to the Pacific, later satisfied by Mackenzie and Lewis and Clark" (Howes). The book includes a fine map and plate of the St. Anthony Falls on the Mississippi. 795.00

Number 31 of 100 sets on hand-made paper. 12 volumes. Publishers vellum backed cloth, the covers and spines stamped and lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches (22 x 14 cm) ; plates and folding maps, prospectus the MacLehose edition of Purchas laid-in at end. Some minor thumbsoiling and discolor to spines, light spotting and usual offsetting within, the Sir Percy Zachariah Cox copy with his bookplate. An excellent facsimile edition of Hakluyt, from the library of British Major General Percy Cox. Sound copies. This comprehensive work was designed with great care. It is loaded with full page plates and foldouts, some of which are rather large. The amazing thing about the foldouts is that they have tissue protectors laid in loose with matching folds. 925.00

Original publisher''s pictorial cloth gilt (blue, green, red and salmon respectively) , all but the first with pictorial endpapers, the first and third works in dust jacket (the Pooh books without). Housed in an attractive morocco-backed clamshell case made of blue cloth which is spotted. The morocco frontis shaped like spines and has a nice effect. 7 3/8 x 4 3/4 inches (18.5 x 12.5 cm) ; various paginations, all volumes illustrated by E. H. Shepard. The dust jacket of When We Were Very Young lacks a portion of the spine and has other wear and minor losses. That of Now We Are Six is overall sound. There is slight wear overall, and one volume has an ownership name. The text of When We Were Very Young is in the second state of the first impression, with page ix numbered. 5500.00

Publisher''s turquoise cloth in dust jacket, preserved in fine and attractive custom morocco clamshell box. 7 1/4 x 4 5/8 inches (18.25 x 11.25 cm) ; 280 pp. ; half-title. Original green cloth boards lighlty bowed as usual, minor light foxing and offsetting to endpapers, booksellers ticket to rear pastedown. A very attractive copy. Woolmer 369. 7s 6p jacket price present. Follows expatriate William Bradshaw in pre-World War II Berlin and his strange friendship with the shady yet comical Arthur Norris. A classic example of Isherwood's decadent character studies culled from Berlin's underworld, Norris is a craven masochist and Communist who informs on his fellow radicals during the Nazis' rise to power 5500.00
