Shrigley, Nathaniel
A True Relation of Virginia and Mary-Land. With the Commodities therein,
which in part the Author saw; the rest he had from knowing and Credible
persons in the Moneths of February, March, April and May

London: Printed by Tho. Milbourn for Thomas Hudson Book-binder, Living the
next door to the Signe of the Blew-Boar in Redcross Street, 1669. No
Binding. A Very Good copy of this RARE publication on the English Colonies
of Virginia and Mary-Land (now called "Maryland") giving a broad description of
those two places, information on the "Chesebeack" Bay such as its
Latitudinal and Longitudinal location, its depth, and its principle rivers
to the Bay's East (Anamesax, Ockahanock, Nangtecocke, little Choptanke,
great Choptanke, St. Michael's, Wy River, Chester, Sacifrax River) and on
the Bay's West side (Elizabeth, Narsemum, James, Back, Yorke, Rapahanock,
Petomock, Patuxon, Soueth, Severn, Gunpowder River, Patapsco), as well as
the distance for which rivers from the Bay are navigable. Shrigley also
discusses animal life (including types of fish) to be found there, states
that the land is naturally full of fruit, vines, and timber -- including
the types of timber that are present, showing the fruitfulness of the land
and the ready availability of natural food sources. The description
(including the title) contains three leaves which are mildly toned and
which show evidence of having been disbound from a volume. (The leaves have
a tenuous hold on each other and may come apart.) The verso of the third
leaf is blank and the other rectos and versos are occupied by the information
communicated by Shrigley about Virginia and Mary-Land, clearly given to
attract settlers and investors. A Very Good copy of this QUITE EARLY PIECE
OF PRE-AMERICA AMERICANA. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE IN THE TRADE. Very Good
[Disbound]. Item #2771
