(THE PLANTIN PRESS) Shakespeare, William. THE SONNETS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE. (Los Angeles: The Plantin Press for Zeitlin & Ver Brugge. 1974). Sm. 8vo. (4),154,(4)pp. Title within a wood engraving by Mary Kuper, plus one additional full-page woodcut by her. Edition limited to 120 copies (actually 110 copies, see below). This is copy #33. Hand printed on an Albion Press on deckle edge handmade paper. Publisher's quarter levant morocco and decorative paper boards, author and title gilt on spine. The binding was designed by Saul Marks. With the binder's ticket "Max J. Adjarian, Malibu, California." Fine copy.    $2,500.00 (trade discount allowed)
A true gem of letterpress fine printing. THE SONNETS OF SHAKESPEARE was completed in the year of Marks' death; it is considered his masterpiece. Printed in a narrow Bembo italic font designed by Alfred Fairbank, the book is an elegant tour-de-force. Although the colophon states 120 copies printed, the BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE PLANTIN PRESS by Harmsen and Tabor #384 states "only 110 bound copies delivered with 4 additional unbound in sheets."
