Philadelphia: George R. Graham, 1842. First Edition. Two volumes bound 
in one, publisher's gilt-lettered black morocco leather and marbled 
boards with matching leather corners. Illustrated with steel engravings 
and 15 color plates. First appearance in print of these 9 Poe works: THE 
MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE; A DESCENT INTO THE MAELSTROM; THE ISLAND OF 
THE FAY; A FEW WORDS ON SECRET WRITING (not in the index); A CHAPTER ON 
AUTOGRAPHY; THE COLLOQUY OF MONOS AND UNA; NEVER BET YOUR HEAD; and 2 
poems: TO HELEN and ISRAFEL. Moderately foxed throughout, as usually the 
case, the Poe pieces tending to be less affected; short, closed tear to 
the first page of "Murders" and a small chunk lacking from the blank 
margin of "Secret Writing"; the first signature pulled but the binding 
firm. Some rubbing with a short split at the top rear. Very Good.
