(SETS) Sale, George and others (eds.). AN UNIVERSAL HISTORY, FROM THE EARLIEST ACCOUNT OF TIME. Compiled from Original Authors; and Illustrated with Maps, Cuts, Notes, &c. With a General Index of the Whole. London: Printed for T. Osborne; A. Millar, and J. Osborn. 1747-1754. 8vo. 21 vols. Vol. 20 contains the cumulative index. Vol. 21 is a chronological table of the foregoing 20 volumes. Illustrated with 42 copper engraved folding maps (including several city maps & plans). Further illustrated with 72 copper engraved plates (complete). Most of the plates are folding, a few of those are in two parts and others have multiple images with more than one plate number. The plates consist of views, portraits and reproductions of archaeological inscriptions. All 21 vols. are uniformly bound in cont. polished calf, a bit worn, with burgundy calf spine labels (one label lacking). Hinges are rubbed with some splits but all are holding soundly. A few vols. have minor chips at extremities of spine.  Engraved armorial bookplates on front pastedowns and front free endpapers. Vol. 8 has minor worming at bottom blank margin of final 50 leaves (no text loss).    $1,500.00 (trade discount allowed)
This is the complete set published 1747-1748 in 20 volumes, plus Vol. 21, the index volume, which was published in 1754. The set continued to be published, eventually completed in 1768 in 65 volumes!  Volumes 22-65 contain the new title, "The Modern Part of an Universal History."
