SAY, Jean-Baptiste. CATECHISM OF POLITICAL ECONOMY; OR, FAMILIAR
CONVERSATIONS ON THE MANNER IN WHICH WEALTH IS PRODUCED, DISTRIBUTED,
AND CONSUMED IN SOCIETY. Philadelphia: M. Carey & Son, May, 1817. First
American Edition. Small quarto (5" x 8"), 144 pages, bound in
contemporary tree calf with a gilt-lettered black morocco spine label.
Translated from the French by John Richter. Say, a defender of
free-trade principles in France, was known for his ability to interest
popular audiences in economic questions. One of the pioneers of the
co-operative movement in France, Say was instrumental in the successful
opposition to the income tax in France, which he considered likely to
discourage individual effort and thrift. Kress B.7040. Light, even
browning throughout; faint pencil signature on title page. Front joint
slightly cracked with the cover just a tad loose. Very Good.
