What the Little Leaf Saw at Christmas Time - 19th C. Child’s Handwritten
Christmas Story.
A neatly-written story signed at the end by Mary E. Hurst, recounting
the tale of a little leaf which finds wintertime shelter under a bush
with a pair of sparrows, from whence he hears of, and sees, the wonder
of the Christmas Story. A New Yorker reviewer might churlishly note that
the leaf’s presence is merely that of the passive observer, lending
supposed credence to an otherwise improbable tale of a Christmas turkey
and gifts being lavished on a poor family by a literal “Deus ex Machina”
mechanism, while a group of angels amuse themselves by batting a bell.
There would be a certain truthfulness in that appraisal, though in
Mary’s defense it must be pointed out that her plot has no more holes
than many other popular 19th century holiday tales, and at least she did
not feel the need to enlist ghosts to make her point.
Eleven lined 5”x8” hand-numbered notepaper sheets. Some soil and wear.
